Hip Pain Disorders
Iliotibial band syndrome characterized by pain on the lateral aspect of the thigh down to the knee elicited by standing with the knee flexed. Treat with NSAIDs, physiotherapy or steroid injections.
Trochanteric bursitis characterized by tenderness on the lateral side of the hip which is exaggerated by abduction of the hip that's movement is limited in that direction. Treatment is as above.
Meralgia paresthetica characterized by numbness at the anterolateral thigh and tenderness at the inguinal area due to lateral femoral cutaneous nerve entrapment.
Osteonecrosis characterized by hip pain around the groin area and buttock exaggerated by walking. Look into history of sickle cell disease, SLE, Gaucher's disease, radiation, organ transplant, alcohol abuse or use of corticosteroids.
Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of hip pain. Diagnose with x-ray and treat accordingly.
